Why Can't I Relax?
So many people ask this question.
Usually quietly.
Usually after they've tried everything else.
A holiday.
A massage.
Meditation.
A walk.
An early night.
A weekend away.
For a little while it helps.
Then life returns, and before long they're asking the same question again.
Why can't I relax?
Maybe relaxation was never something to achieve.
Maybe it's something we stop interrupting.
The body knows how to relax.
Watch a sleeping baby.
A dog stretched out in the sunshine.
The trees moving with the wind.
Relaxation isn't something nature has forgotten.
It belongs to us too.
Life simply asks a lot of us.
We learn to keep going.
To keep everyone happy.
To solve problems before they've fully arrived.
To think about tomorrow while we're still living today.
Little by little, staying ready becomes more familiar than letting go.
Not because we choose it.
Because we adapt to the lives we're living.
Then one day we decide it's time to relax.
We lie down.
Close our eyes.
Take a deep breath.
And discover that the body hasn't caught up with the decision our mind has made.
That isn't failure.
It's relationship.
The mind and the body don't always move at the same pace.
One can decide in an instant.
The other often arrives gently.
For years I believed relaxation was something I needed to make happen.
Another thing to get right.
Another box to tick.
Now it feels much simpler than that.
Relaxation arrives most easily when I stop asking my body to become different from how it is right now.
The body softens when it feels included.
Not corrected.
There are days when relaxation looks like laughter.
Days when it looks like movement.
Days when it looks like tears.
Days when it looks like sitting quietly with a cup of tea and nowhere else to be.
There isn't one expression of ease.
There is only the one that belongs to this moment.
I've noticed something else too.
The more I fight my experience, the further away relaxation seems to become.
The more willing I am to stay with myself exactly as I am, the more space begins to appear.
Not because I've forced it.
Because I've stopped arguing with what was already here.
Settled Body Method isn't about teaching the body how to relax.
It's about creating a relationship where relaxation no longer has to be forced.
Where awareness replaces pressure.
Where curiosity replaces judgement.
Where the body no longer has to work so hard to be heard.
The question slowly changes.
It stops being,
"Why can't I relax?"
It becomes,
"What would allow me to be more with myself, right here?"
Sometimes the answer is rest.
Sometimes it's movement.
Sometimes it's a conversation.
Sometimes it's nothing more than one full breath.
Every answer is different because every body is different.
Relaxation isn't a destination waiting somewhere in the future.
It's woven through ordinary moments.
A shoulder that finally drops.
A breath that reaches a little deeper.
The warmth of the morning sun.
The feeling of bare feet on the grass.
The laughter that arrives when we least expect it.
Life is constantly offering us invitations back to ourselves.
The body has always known how to accept them.
Perhaps all it's been waiting for...
...is our company.
