What Does It Mean To Feel Safe In Your Body?

For a long time, I imagined feeling safe in my body meant never feeling anxious.

Never feeling overwhelmed.

Never holding tension.

Never having my heart race or my stomach tighten.

I was waiting for a version of myself that moved through life untouched.

That version never arrived.

Life was always going to ask something of me.

Life was always going to surprise me.

Life was always going to bring moments of uncertainty, joy, grief, excitement and change.

The body was always going to respond.

Feeling safe in your body isn't about never being affected by life.

It's about knowing you don't have to leave yourself when life happens.

The body is beautifully responsive.

A loud noise.

A difficult conversation.

Exciting news.

An unexpected phone call.

The body notices before we've had time to think about it.

The heart beats a little faster.

The breath changes.

The muscles prepare.

None of this means something has gone wrong.

It means you're alive.

Some of us learnt, often without realising it, that certain experiences weren't safe.

Speaking up.

Making mistakes.

Being seen.

Resting.

Receiving.

Taking up space.

Over time the body adapts.

Not because it's broken.

Because it loves us enough to keep finding ways to protect us.

That protection can become so familiar that we mistake it for who we are.

I've discovered that safety feels much less like certainty than I once imagined.

It feels like companionship.

The quiet knowing that whatever I notice, I don't have to push it away.

I don't have to become someone else before I deserve my own kindness.

I don't have to wait until I feel calm before I can be with myself.

I can meet myself exactly where I am.

There are days when my body feels spacious.

There are days when it feels contracted.

Days when everything flows.

Days when life feels louder.

None of those experiences remove the relationship.

In many ways, they deepen it.

Because every moment becomes another opportunity to stay.

Not to force.

Not to fix.

Simply to remain in my own company.

I've found that the deepest sense of safety doesn't come from controlling the world around me.

It comes from discovering that I can stay connected to myself while the world continues to change.

That changes everything.

Because life no longer has to be perfect before I can experience peace.

The relationship becomes the place I return to, wherever I am.

Settled Body Method grew from that understanding.

Not from trying to create a life where nothing ever feels uncomfortable.

From discovering that awareness allows us to stay with ourselves through every chapter of life.

Joy.

Grief.

Celebration.

Uncertainty.

Love.

Loss.

The body has the capacity to hold all of it.

So do we.

Feeling safe in your body isn't about eliminating discomfort.

It's about knowing that discomfort doesn't mean you've lost yourself.

Your breath is still here.

Your body is still here.

You are still here.

That is a very different kind of safety.

Perhaps feeling safe in your body isn't the absence of life's challenges.

Perhaps it's the quiet confidence that, whatever life brings, you'll meet it without abandoning yourself.
