Body Awareness vs Mindfulness

I don't find myself asking which is better.

They're not in competition.

They simply invite our attention in slightly different directions.

Both create space.

Both invite us into the present moment.

Both remind us that life is happening now, not somewhere in the future.

Where they begin to feel different is in the relationship they create.

Mindfulness is often described as paying attention to the present moment.

Body awareness begins by including yourself in that present moment.

Not just your thoughts.

Your body.

Your breathing.

Your posture.

The way your feet meet the ground.

The way your shoulders respond to a conversation.

The way your chest softens when you hear good news.

The way your stomach tightens before you've consciously realised something matters.

The body is part of every experience we have.

Body awareness simply invites us to include it.

There was a time when I believed awareness happened in the mind.

Now awareness feels much bigger than that.

It includes the body.

Not because the body has all the answers.

Because the body is always participating in the conversation.

Every experience leaves an imprint.

Every moment is lived through a body.

To leave it out feels like reading only half the story.

I've found that the body notices life in ways the mind sometimes hasn't caught up with yet.

A breath changes.

The jaw tightens.

The shoulders rise.

A deep sigh appears before we've even realised we needed one.

These moments don't need analysing.

They don't need fixing.

They simply ask to be noticed.

Body awareness has become less about paying closer attention.

It's become about paying kinder attention.

Meeting myself without immediately trying to improve the experience.

Without deciding whether today's version of me is the one I wanted.

Without rushing towards a different feeling.

Just being willing to stay.

There is something profoundly settling about being met by yourself in that way.

I don't experience mindfulness and body awareness as separate practices.

One naturally deepens the other.

The more present I become, the more available I am to my body.

The more available I become to my body, the more present I find myself in my life.

The two begin to dance together.

One expanding the other.

Settled Body Method grew from that relationship.

Not from asking people to become more mindful.

Not from asking them to become more aware of their body.

From inviting them into a deeper relationship with themselves.

A relationship where awareness is no longer something we do for ten minutes before getting on with the day.

It becomes the way we meet the day itself.

Body awareness isn't another practice to perfect.

Neither is mindfulness.

They're invitations.

Invitations to come back into relationship with the life that's already unfolding.

One breath.

One step.

One moment of noticing at a time.

And perhaps that's where they meet.

Not in technique.

In presence.
