Why Do We Hold Our Breath Without Realising?

Breathing is one of the few things we do every moment of every day without needing to think about it.

Until one day...

We notice we haven't really taken a full breath in hours.

Maybe even days.

And the question arrives.

When did that happen?

I've become fascinated by the moments we hold our breath without ever deciding to.

While replying to an email.

Reading a message.

Waiting for someone to answer the phone.

Concentrating.

Driving.

Listening.

Even feeling excited.

The body quietly pauses.

Not because we've told it to.

Because, for a moment, that's what made sense.

For years I believed I needed to remember to breathe.

Now the question feels different.

What is happening in this moment that my body has chosen to hold its breath?

Not because I need an answer.

Because that question brings me back into relationship with myself.

The breath is beautifully honest.

It reflects the life we're living.

Some days it's slow and spacious.

Other days it becomes shorter, quicker or quieter.

Not because we've failed.

Because the body is always participating in our experience.

Every conversation.

Every thought.

Every emotion.

Every moment of anticipation.

The breath is there, moving with us through all of it.

Holding our breath isn't something to feel guilty about.

It isn't another habit to break.

It's often one of the first ways the body responds to change.

A moment of uncertainty.

A difficult decision.

A memory.

A surprise.

The body prepares before we've even realised we're preparing.

Then, just as quietly, it waits for us to notice.

I've realised that my breath tells me less about how well I'm breathing and more about how closely I'm living alongside myself.

When I notice I'm holding my breath, I don't rush to change it.

I let the noticing be enough.

Almost every time, the next breath arrives differently all by itself.

Not because I forced it.

Because awareness made space for it.

There is something incredibly gentle about that.

The body doesn't demand perfection.

It doesn't ask us to breathe deeply every minute of the day.

It simply responds to the life we're living.

Again and again.

Moment by moment.

Always adapting.

Always finding the next breath.

Settled Body Method has changed the way I experience breathing.

Not by teaching me how to breathe.

By helping me notice that my breath has been in conversation with my life all along.

Sometimes open.

Sometimes held.

Sometimes expansive.

Sometimes barely noticeable.

Every breath belongs.

Every breath is welcome.

Maybe the invitation isn't to breathe more deeply.

Maybe it's to become more available to the breath that's already here.

To notice it.

To walk beside it.

To let it remind us that we're here too.

The next time you notice you've been holding your breath...

Pause.

Not to correct it.

Simply to meet yourself.

The body already knows how to breathe.

Sometimes it's simply waiting for your company.
