The ultimate guide to Social Media strategy for small business

Social media strategy for small business

In this ultimate guide we are going to be exploring why creating a social media strategy for your small business is the productivity boost you need right now and how best to do so.

A social media strategy is a plan which lays out:

  • Which social media platforms are right for your business

  • Understanding what you are using each platform for

  • How you are going to position your small business on the social platform

  • Best ways to optimise your social media profiles for your brand

Which social media platforms are right for your business?

This is a two part question;

  1. Which platforms do you want to use, which do you enjoy being on?

  2. Which platforms are your ideal clients on?

  3. Which platform is best for supporting and connecting with others who have a similar audience?

There is no reason for you to be on a social media platform which you don't enjoy using. After all the main concept with social media is being social! You need to choose a platform you enjoy using or at least be prepared to start enjoying using your chosen platforms.

Then which platforms are your ideal clients on?

Where are they hanging out and which platform/s are they consuming regularly?

Where are they posting their problems / turning to for support / inspiration / entertainment?

Another way to utilise the power of social media in your small business is to look out for others with a similar audience to you, who you can connect with to offer mutual help and support.

Which platform is best for supporting others in your industry?

Understanding what you are using each platform for:

Every platform you choose to include in the social media strategy for your small business must have a purpose.

For example - are you posting on facebook to nurture a community and grow your facebook group or email list? Are you posting on instagram to inspire and give an insight into your behind the scenes working day to encourage followers to click through links or join your email list? Are you hanging out on LinkedIn so you can be known as the expert?

What do you want the platform to do for your business? How do you want to use each platform? What is your objective for each one?

Similarly, think about what your ideal customers are using each platform for.

Are they looking for education or advice? Are they there to escape and be entertained? What do they want from each platform and how can you use this information to strengthen the way you show up there?

Social media strategy is never one size fits, you can choose as many or as few platforms as you like IF you feel you can consistently show up, deliver and engage on them.

Choose the right platforms that work for you easily incorporating them into your day.

How are you going to position your small business on the social platform?

In order to position your brand on your chosen social media platforms you need to answer the following questions.

  • What is the aim of the specific platform?

For example - drive traffic to your opt in / start conversations.

  • How do your ideal customers love to use the platform?

For example - they love using instagram stories but aren’t exploring grids as much, maybe they are always searching on insta so you will need to up your hashtag game?

  • What can you do to thrill them?

For example - show up in insta stories with a daily tip they love, maybe you document your daily life, maybe have a fb group and you give loads of value. Twitter your audience love that you are opinionated and they never know what you're going to say but love following you.

  • What does the platform want you to do?

For example - go directly to the platform and get clear on specifically what the platform requires of you. This is the best info you will get. Instagram creates features so you use them. IG stories / IG lives / IG filters for your grid etc.

Best ways to optimise your social media profiles for your brand

The following 3 principles are at the core of my branding process:

  • Instantly recognisable

  • Telling the right story

  • Be impactful

#1 profile picture

Is your social media profile photo instantly recognisable? is it engaging / approachable?

Does it represent you in the way your audience know and recognise you?

Does your profile photo tell your story?

Is your profile picture impactful?

#2  Cover image

Is your social media cover image branded?

Is it sized correctly for the platform?

Is your cover image doing a job for you? For example does it have a strong call to action taking your tribe through a journey?

Does your cover image act as a shining beacon for your brand? Is it impactful?

Does your cover image tell your brand story?

Is your cover image recognisable to you and your branding?

#3 Headline

Mind shift - no one cares what you do! What your audience care about is what you can do for them.

Think to yourself are you describing the transformation you offer?

Is your headline impactful?

Does your headline tell a story?

Is your headline recognisable as your brand voice?

#4 Links

Are your links, URLs and website up to date?

Personal profiles on FB are the most visited place, when people meet you in groups or want to connect with you 9 times out of 10 they will connect via your personal page. Make sure your links are up to date.

Keep in mind, if you are connecting with someone for the first time you want some background info. Especially if you are going to opt in to a challenge or look to work with them. They will want to know you are clearly who you say you are. Make sure you personal profiles are strongly branded in line with the values of your business. Make sure it is clearly aligned with your values, personality and character and that they shine through strongly.

What ever is the top of your focus, for example growing your email list, make sure that link is absolutely highlighted. Remember: if you don’t push it and make it easy for your audience then they won’t look!

#5 Using all the features

Are you utilising all the functions of the platform AND have you optimised all these places?

For example have you chosen a featured image on Facebook? Does it have a clear call to action?

The Social Strategy for your small business is:

  • which platforms you want to use and what you want to use them for

  • what job that platform is doing for your business

  • types of content you are posting

  • Frequency of posting on social media platforms

Here is an example social strategy for small business:

Which platforms have you chosen?

Facebook

LinkedIn

What jobs does each platform have?

Funnel to the website

Positioning for partnering with other brands with a similar audience

What types of content most suitable?

Facebook: Blog promo, Tips, Questions, Story posts ,Live video FB

LinkedIn: Pre recorded videos, Education opinionated posts, Blog promos

Frequency you want to post

Once a day on both platforms.

Don’t make your life difficult - use engaging and captivating images and graphics that you can easily resize and repurpose over multiple platforms for slightly different uses.

Avoid social media jail with your strategy for your small business

A social media strategy helps you utilise social media for your business without overwhelm.

As we all know too well, it’s very easy to fall down the social media rabbit hole. You just popped onto instagram to post on your grid then started having a nosey of likes, checking out some of your hashtags, then look through your feed and you end up watching a soap shaving video before you know it 3 hours have gone.

Mind Shift

The more you spend CONSUMING social media. The less time you are spending providing value to your audience.

Top tips

  • Schedule time to post and interact on social media - stick to it like glue.

  • Deliver show up and be there for your audience your readers

  • Don’t get taken away by looking at other social pages - pulling you away from delivering value and showing up for the people who are showing up for you.

  • Schedule your interaction time. In an hour im going to check insta and comment for two minutes. Different platforms have different requirements. You do not need to be spending hours scrolling through waiting for people to comment and waiting for “it” to happen.

  • By developing the habit you are going to reap the rewards of consistency! Consistency always wins!

Mistakes to avoid using social media for your small business

  • Thinking that anything other than providing value to your ideal customer is going to boost your business

  • You spending time doing anything that isn't posting on your own social media accounts, developing values for your readers - offerings, resources, reviews, videos, blog posts live streaming - is taking you away from what you need to be doing. Thinking that doing anything else, looking at what others are doing, posting in groups asking for people who AREN’T your ideal customers to come look at your stuff etc, is just taking you away from the people who actually want you to be there for them. They will lose interest and leave you. Keep focus on them and they will keep focus on you.

  • Showing up inconsistently - one day i'm going to stick to everything, next month cant be bothered. I'll just post on fb everyday. By being flaky and inconsistent you will lose followers lose readers and lose engagement.

  • Forgetting to engage with people who are taking the time to comment. They are taking time out of their day to engage with you - why would you not engage with them? Why is scrolling through someone else's page more important than engaging with your tribe?

  • Forgetting that each platform has a purpose and utilising that to the fullest. Don’t forget you have a specific reason to showing up on each platform

  • Getting caught up on vanity metrics! 10,000, 100,000, 500 followers of the wrong follower is no followers at all. You might as well have 0. If your followers are not your target customer they do not matter. You can not serve them fully. Your purpose is to serve your ideal reader - the person who you know you have a solution to their problem. If you have 10,000 followers who have a problem that you don’t have a solution for what is the point in them following you? Quality over quantity.

  • Make your brand wishy washy with irrelevant content and random reviews.  Don't dilute your brand by posting irrelevant content. Irrelevant chit chat. Everything you post has a purpose. You are filling your social platforms with fantastic value filled relevant content. Don’t dilute that by posting irrelevant rubbish that your ideal customer doesn’t care about.

  • Don't jeopardise your brand for a quick fix. Don't ask people to follow you who aren't your Ideal client. Don’t buy followers. As you bring people, the right people to you, you will get everything you want. Have patience and work with purpose. 500 engaged fabulous followers worth a million times more than 1,000,000 false ones.

  • Focussing your time on people who aren’t your target customer - buying followers, asking people for opinions, comments, shares, that aren’t you target customer - irrelevant.

To summarise avoid putting yourself into social media jail, where you are time restricted and beholden to people who do not matter to what you are doing. Focus all of your time and energy onto the people who you can help and your business will thrive. You won't feel like you have a business that rules your life. You will be in control of your social media and feel empowered because of that.

Blogger Photoshoot Behind The Scenes - Fashion & Lifestyle Influencer

Blogger Photoshoot behind the scenes

I am asked all the time what do shoots really look like behind the scenes - So I thought I would give you an exclusive look at exactly what goes on during a blogger photography shoot for blog content, instagram images etc.

Firstly I will say that all shoots are unique! Not only in the styling of your blogger photo shoot but most interestingly in what each blogger or influencer is requiring from their photoshoot.

One shoot might need 100 images for the next 3 months on instagram whereas another might require 100 images for 5 blog posts reviewing items of sharing specific styling details of a look.

One blogger shoot might need images that are full length and very obviously and clearly show casing specific items, whether that be fashion looks or accessories like handbags and shoes, whereas another might call for all interesting more creative vibe images like birds eye view shots or laid back laughing candid photography shots.

From lifestyle photoshoots to the most trendy and edgy street style fashion photography every shoot truly is different and unique.

The biggest tip I want to give you before we get into the goodness of what I am sharing with you today, is that every shoot has the potential to be amazing for you and your blog business.

Setting you up with as much content as you want and (can fit in the time to sit down and think about beforehand). And that right there is the crucial tip I want to really nail home to you guys:

The more time you spend preparing for your shoot - even if you are shooting every week every day! The more you will reap the rewards!

Being completely clear on why you are shooting and what you NEED and want from each shot is critical to having an amazing influencer photoshoot experience.

I share my 20 tips to getting better blog photos in this article here, have a read as I think you will find this super useful.

So here we go with my roundup of some the first of my behind the scenes look at blogger photography shoots for content images and instagram photos.

A fashion influencer Photo Shoot behind the scenes

Becca

Becca is one of my favs to shoot with because she is so versatile AND she is fearless!

She loves nothing more than popping a pout in a luxury bathroom and texting me to tell me to come on in and grab a gorgeous shot for her!

Photoshoot behind the scenes influencer

Yes this might not be to everyone's preference but one thing I can say about every shoot with Becca is we have so much fun!!

We also have a very similar taste and eye for great locations so it's always amazing to catch up with Becca and share new finds, she is forever instagram tagging me when she finds something awesome.

Fashion blogger photoshoot

Check Becca out over on Instagram - she has most recently starred in yet another year of catwalk shows at every fashion week going!

This shoot was on a lovely late summer day, we started in the afternoon so the light was getting a bit less harsh which meant we were spoilt for choice with locations.

We wanted 3 very different looks and so planned in advance which would work best with the ever changing light.

Fashion influencer photoshoot

We shot in central London, Kensington around some of the beautiful little mews (with permission of the residents!) found a lovely cafe to die for, full of gold gilt, chandeliers and french charm and took the opportunity to grab a lush looking couple of drinks! (obviously we used them for some images after chatting to the owners about what the best looking refreshments on their menu was.)

Influencer photographer photoshoots London

A note to add here is that being a professional commercial model and TV personality Becca is super used to getting changed when and wherever.

If you haven’t prepared for your shoot well beforehand;

  • which location in which order,

  • what facilities there are,

  • which outfits will work best and make easiest changing situation ( a skirt to trousers is super easy because you can change without any issues),

Photographer for bloggers behind the scenes

then you are asking for the shoot to be stressful and inconvenient to all those concerned.

Yes I have created shoots where we have a pop up changing area available BUT this is never on anyone's door step. It is in  a discreet and private location where we can also leave some kit and an assistant to mind it.

When you are shooting on location you have to be aware of the safety or everyone involved - read more about this in my everything you need to know about blogger photoshoots article.

Fashion influencer content photography

This was one of my most fav shoots because of how perfect the weather, location and day in general went - it was so much fun, we fulfilled the brief with ease and i’m sure you agree the sense of how happy we all were really shines through in the images.

So how DO you start a blog AND get paid for it? Can i really make a living by starting an online blog business?

Ofcourse!!

A blog is a business - you heard me say this earlier and it is a super important piece of information because it is the mindset in which you approach your blog that is going to dictate your success.

If you view your blog as a hobby, then that’s what it will be.

If you look at your blog as if it will never make money, then i’m afraid to tell you it probably won’t!

If you decide your blog is only going to make a few ££$$ from the odd affiliate link click or random sponsored post opportunity then again that is what will happen!

I’m sure you will agree that if you are wanting your blog to be a profitable business then you are ready to take it seriously, and seriously means getting to grips with your expectations and ambitions for your blog business.

A successful blog is the same as ANY successful business, success in business terms, means helping the most people who are happy to then pay you for your solution to their problem.

It’s all about being profitable and sustainable and nurturing a thrilled tribe.

It’s really important to me that as many people as possible realise ALL the avenues you can utilise to make money blogging so below I have created some handy strategies to help you get started:

7 ways to help you develop a profitable blog business (even if you are a beginner!)

  1. Affiliate marketing & Affiliate programs for bloggers

  2. Sponsored posts

  3. Brand partnerships and ambassador

  4. Services

  5. Products

  6. Online offerings

  7. Directories

We know a blog is a business.

And that means like any business, the key to success is to be prepared and do the foundational work that will set you up for the future.

Getting to know what you and your blog are about and who it is you are here to help is crucial for turning a great blog into a profitable business.

Whether you are a lifestyle blogger, fashion blogger, maybe you have a travel or parenting blog the same rules apply!

blogger photographer Jade Hicks photography for blog shoot

Here are 8 steps you MUST take to turn ANY blog into a money making business:

1 - Blog business plan - having a blog business plan is a crucial step in success from your blog! Your business plan will set out what your blog business is all about and where you want to go. It will give you the focus around income plans and your mission as a blog business.

2 - Strong Foundations - Knowing what you stand for, what your unique personality is, the experience and promise you are offering your readers and customers as well as the way in which you want to serve them.

3 - Know your blog audience - This is THE MOST important step to success for your blog. Really get to know who your readers are and why you are suited to help solve their problems, get to know what they want to sort out so much they are happily willing to pay for the solution to that particular problem and learn how they speak and view it.

4 - Get clear on Goals for your blog - Setting down goals is a huge factor for making money. Have a think about what you want to achieve in 1 month, 6 months and 12 months and see if you are able to write down exactly what your long term plan for your blog business is.

5 - Strategy and action - from knowing your audience, how you are going to serve them and the goals you are looking to achieve you can easily work out the best strategy to get you there. Knowing where your audience hangs out, how and why is crucial information for you to be able to take action to present them their solution in the most acceptable way.

6 - Get specific - it’s not about Niching down to lifestyle or fashion travel or parenting - it’s about KNOWING your readers and knowing how YOU relate to them. Which parts of your story are going to help them, inspire them and allow them to connect more deeply with you? Get specific over your audience and all the ways you have that you can connect with them.

7 - Be authentic - dont try to make yourself fit into a space that doesn’t work for you. Be true to who you are, get to know who you are talking to and mould those pieces together. It’s really hard to try and be someone you are not consistently. It’s much easier to own your cookies and show up as yourself each and every day.

8 - Show up - all of this above is a huge waste of time if you don’t tell anyone you exist. It’s time to step to the front, own your blog as a business and spread your message to those who need to hear it. Consistently!

Knowing the fundamentals to creating a long term blog business is a step that sadly, I see

time and time again has been missed.

So many bloggers I work with haven’t given thought to the business side of their blog until much later down the line.

This means there usually has been a lot of frustration and stress incurred as a result!

Not attracting the amount of new blog followers and subscribers, feeling like you are on every social media platform and still not getting eyes on your content and simply not getting the traffic you so badly want are all symptoms of not having the clarity you need for a success blog business.

I promise the time and effort you take to get clear on what your blog business is all about is going to be absolutely worth it.

The final part of this article is all around the blog ideas that make money!

I’m not going to get heavy on niching here - my take is that a niche, as I explained above, just means the specific audience you are talking to, and FYI you have several audiences in your blog business.

There are loads of options for blog topics that you can monetise, here are some of the most popular and high demand and topic areas:

  1. Entertainment - Love movies? TV? Maybe you are a huge music fan? This is a really highly searched area of topic because who isnt always googling the next episode for their favourite show right?

  2. Fitness - Maybe you have been on a journey with your health and fitness and you’ve found a sport, hobby or exercise regime that has done wonders for you, or maybe you are the queen of squats so want to share your kick ass routine with everyone! There are unlimited options here on how to make the fitness area of expertise work for you and your blog business.

  3. Education - Again a hugely broad topic. Maybe you are a teacher and you want to help educate other teachers on how to handle a specific type of student in the classroom, maybe you are a home ed family and want to help others get to grips with learning at home.

  4. Technology - are you obsessed with gadgets? Maybe something specific like sound equipment, lighting this again is a hugly broad topic for you to blog about something you really love and are passionate about helping others understand.

  5. Health and wellness - sharing your own personal story is always a winning idea for a killer health and wellness blog. People love to understand that something has actually worked for a real life person so this could be your chance to share what you have been through.

I always see questions around blog topics that make the most money, and I genuinely think this is really down to the strategy behind monetisation of specific blogs in general.

For example, if you want to make a really profitable quick business then choosing a topic that is highly trending and searched for makes a great way to grow a following and quickly!

E.g writing about the Kardashians - if you write quality content maybe a beauty blog on how to replicate specific looks you are going to have an actively searching audience ready to click on your content! - You could easily monetise a business like this by offering makeup 1-2-1 lessons virtually over the internet, or by offering personal makeup shopping virtually.

So in terms of how much money you can make from a blog, really how much money do you WANT to make from your blog?

I was asked recently how can I make my first million by blogging?

Well, let’s work it out!

If you sell your offering at £5 - sell 200,000 of them

If you sell your offering at £50 - sell 20,000 of them

If you sell your offering at £500 - sell 2,000 of them

If you sell your offering at £5000 - sell 200 of them.

Work out your offering, work out how much you want to earn, set your price point and go get them sold!

It’s perfectly possible to make £1,000,000 in your blogging business in a year or less! You just have to get clear on your strategy, how are you going to bring income into your blog business?

the business of blogging

Blogging as a professional is a long term path, that comes with long term goals and a bigger picture outlook. Make today the day you choose to get clear on what you want from your blog business and reach for the stars!
